Right
now, I'm writing. Of course, you could find me blogging,
too.
Hurray!
Hurray! Hurray! Close Encounters of a Third-World Kind has been
nominated for Connecticut's 2009 Nutmeg
Book Award in the intermediate books category! I am beyond excited
and so grateful to the Nutmeg committee! School Library Journal featured
it as a "Remarkable Read" in December. Coincidentally, Holiday
House released it in paperback in January, 2008.
Writer's
Digest named my website (yes, this very one!) as a top ten finalist
in the WD Best Writer's Website Contest. Read
the article.
Close Encounters of a Third-World
Kind appears on Maryland's 2007-2008
Black-Eyed Susan Book Award list for grades 4-6. Thank
you, Maryland librarians! It was also honored by being placed on the master
list for Arizona's 2007 Grand
Canyon Reader Award. It was part of the 2007-2008
Hillsborough County Battle of the Books, and it shows up on the South
Carolina Reads 2007 list, as one of 100
Suggested Titles for Middle School Students. The book has been chosen
by both the Kansas National Education Association and the Missouri
State Teachers Association as Reading Circle books for the intermediate
grades. Double hurray! Close Encounters of a Third-World Kind
also received a Teddy Children's Book Award Special Citation, given by
the Writers' League of Texas.
I and the other finalists were honored at a reception at the Governor's
mansion in Austin.
This is the fourth time one
of my books has made a state list. (If That Breathes Fire, We're Toast!
made Oklahoma's master list for the Sequoyah Book Award). Cynthia Leitich
Smith interviewed me about the process of writing this novel. Click here
to read it. Arizona Daily Star columnist Bonnie Henry also profiled
me. You can read that article by clicking here. Isn't
the cover eye-catching? The talented artist is James Yamasaki, who lives
in Japan.
You may enjoy reading some of my other publications.
The lead article for July 2006 on the Children's
Book Council site details a fun way to promote your children's book.
The article was written by Arizona authors Juanita Havill, Charline Profiri,
and myself. Also, an article, "Eleven
Serious Tips from a Funny Writer" appeared in the inaugural issue
of SCBWI Arizona's The Journey e-zine. You can also read what the library
means to me, by clicking here.
